Catamaran Surveyor Greece

Independent catamaran specialist surveyor working throughout Greece — pre-purchase, insurance, damage and MCA coding surveys on production and custom multihulls.

What this service involves

Greece is one of the world's largest markets for production catamarans — both charter-fleet boats and private cruisers — and the ex-charter market for Lagoon, Bali, Fountaine Pajot and Leopard multihulls is where many private buyers find their first catamaran. Surveying a catamaran is not the same as surveying a monohull. The structural load paths are different, the systems are duplicated, the bridgedeck geometry imposes its own wear pattern, and the high-cycle deck hardware on a charter-fleet boat tells a different story to that on a private cruiser.

SVG Marine surveys catamarans throughout Greece as part of a deliberately specialist multihull practice. We assess the bridgedeck and structural bonding, the rig and forebeam, the trampoline and netting loads, the twin engine and sail-drive installations, the bonded bulkheads and chainplates, and the electrical and water-systems layouts that on a catamaran are essentially two boats in parallel.

For pre-purchase buyers we run a sea trial under sail and power, an out-of-water inspection at a local yard, a moisture survey of the laminate and a systems-by-systems review against the original manufacturer specification. Reports are written in plain language for the buyer — and in compliance language for the broker, insurer and (where applicable) Certifying Authority.

For owners taking a boat out of charter into private ownership, or moving from private into charter, we also support the documentation and certification side of the transition — MCA coding, tonnage measurement and insurance renewal surveys.

Where we work

We attend catamarans throughout Greece — typically combining haul-out and sea trial at the boat's home base. Mobilisation is usually arranged within one to three weeks of first enquiry, and out-of-water slots are coordinated with the relevant yard.

Frequently asked questions

Why do catamarans need a specialist surveyor?

Catamarans have structural, rigging and systems characteristics that differ markedly from monohulls — bridgedeck construction, twin engine installations, bonded bulkhead arrangements, and trampoline and forebeam loads. A surveyor experienced with multihulls reads these as a system rather than two separate hulls.

Which catamaran brands do you survey in Greece?

Lagoon, Bali, Fountaine Pajot, Leopard, Nautitech, Privilège, Outremer and Catana production multihulls as well as custom and semi-custom builds. Survey scope is tailored to model, age and intended use (private cruising, bareboat charter or skippered charter).

What's the most common issue you find on charter catamarans in Greece?

The recurring themes are sail-drive seal life, bridgedeck slamming wear, helm-station electronics that have been water-affected, and rigging that has run on schedule but not on inspection. None are unusual; all are addressable with a clear report.

Can you survey a catamaran I want to buy ex-charter?

Yes — ex-charter catamarans are one of the most common pre-purchase survey requests in Greece. Survey scope explicitly covers high-wear charter areas (engines and sail-drives, deck hardware, electrical systems, soft furnishings) alongside the usual hull, rig and systems checks.

Do I need to haul the catamaran out?

For a pre-purchase or insurance survey, yes — a short-out-of-water inspection is essential to assess the hulls, rudders, sail-drives or shafts, and underwater fittings. We coordinate haul-out at Lavrion, Lefkada, Preveza, Volos, Kos or wherever the boat is based.

How long does a catamaran survey take?

A typical pre-purchase survey on a 40-50ft catamaran is one to two full days, including a sea trial and an out-of-water inspection. Reports are issued within five to ten working days.

Can you combine the survey with MCA coding?

Yes. For buyers who plan to charter the catamaran commercially under a UK flag, combining the pre-purchase survey with an MCA coding examination is efficient and saves a second mobilisation.

Where do you typically attend catamarans in Greece?

Lavrion, Athens (Alimos / Kalamaki), Lefkada, Preveza, Corfu, Kefalonia, Volos, Skiathos, Paros, Kos, Rhodes and the wider Cyclades and Dodecanese.
