Tonnage Measurement Antigua
UK Simplified and Full Tonnage Measurement for yachts in Antigua across November and December 2026 — measurement, calculation and certification for Part I and Part III registration handled by an MCA-authorised surveyor.
What this service involves
Tonnage measurement is a prerequisite for Part I UK registration, for mortgageable title in many lending jurisdictions, and for some commercial flag-change processes. For yachts being purchased in Antigua during the November and December 2026 ARC arrival and Charter Show window, having the measurement done locally avoids shipping the vessel back to Europe simply to satisfy a paperwork requirement.
SVG Marine is authorised by the MCA to carry out both Simplified Measurement (the method used for sub-24m yachts entering the Part III Small Ships Register) and Full Tonnage Measurement under the Merchant Shipping (Tonnage) Regulations 1997 (the method required for Part I registration and for larger commercially operated vessels). Both gross and net tonnage are calculated and certified.
Practical workflow: attendance on board for the physical measurements and verification of internal volumes, calculation off-vessel, then issue of the tonnage certificate and the documentation pack the owner or owner's lawyer needs to file the registration application with the UK Ship Register. The Carving and Marking Note is prepared where the registration requires the official number and tonnage to be permanently marked on the main beam.
Combined attendance with MCA coding work, an insurance survey or a pre-purchase survey is the norm for Antigua bookings — one mobilisation, one set of reports, one fee for the attendance.
Where we work
Measurements are typically completed in the berth — no haul-out required. English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour, Nelson's Dockyard and Jolly Harbour are the usual venues; multihulls are handled at Catamaran Marina or alongside in North Sound. Onward attendance in St Martin, BVI and Grenada can be added within the same trip.

Frequently asked questions
When is SVG Marine in Antigua for tonnage measurement?
Across November and December 2026, scheduled around the Antigua Charter Yacht Show and the ARC and ARC+ arrivals. Measurement appointments in English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour and Jolly Harbour can be booked for that window.
Which Tonnage measurement methods do you carry out?
Simplified Measurement (for Part III Small Ships Register) and Full Tonnage Measurement under the Merchant Shipping (Tonnage) Regulations 1997 for Part I registration. Both gross and net tonnage are calculated and certified.
Why measure in Antigua rather than wait for the boat to return to the UK?
If the vessel is being purchased in the Caribbean, transferring flag, or moving to UK Part I registration for finance or charter reasons, tonnage measurement is required before the registration can issue. Doing it on arrival in Antigua avoids a long delay.
Can you handle the registration paperwork as well?
Yes. SVG Marine prepares the tonnage certificate, Carving and Marking Note (CMN) where applicable, and the documentation pack required by the UK Ship Register. The owner or owner's lawyer files the registration application itself.
Which Antigua yards and marinas do you cover?
Nelson's Dockyard, English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour Marina, Antigua Yacht Club Marina, Jolly Harbour Marina and Boatyard, North Sound Marina and Catamaran Marina. Most measurements can be completed in the berth without a haul-out.
How long does a measurement take?
A simplified measurement is typically a half day on board for sub-24m yachts. Full tonnage measurement on a larger vessel can be a full day on board, with the calculation and certificate issued within seven working days.
Can you combine tonnage measurement with MCA coding or a pre-purchase survey?
Yes — and most owners do. Combined attendance saves mobilisation cost. Tonnage measurement, coding examination and a pre-purchase or insurance survey can all be completed in a single Antigua visit.
Is the certificate accepted internationally?
Yes. UK tonnage certification is recognised under the International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1969, and accepted by other flag states, ports of call and Suez and Panama Canal authorities for transit fee calculation.
